Error MD 2018

Error MD 2018 indicates that the spectrometer failed to set the correct photomultiplier voltage, preventing optimal output. This affects iCE 3300, iCE 3400, and iCE 3500 models. To resolve, switch out the lamps. In analysis, a customer using a Ca/Mg lamp passed the monochromator calibration, but the error persisted with a Ca-only lamp. Using the Ca/Mg lamp resolved the issue. The cause was identified as the hollow cathode lamp (HCL) not putting out enough energy.

Issue

Error MD 2018: The spectrometer has failed to set the correct photomultiplier voltage. The optimum output cannot be found.

Environment

  • iCE 3300
  • iCE 3400
  • iCE 3500

Resolution

Switch out lamps.

Analysis

Customer had a Ca/Mg  lamp. Had them run a monochromator calibration which passed. When switched back to their Ca only lamp, the error persisted. Had customer use the Ca/Mg lamp and the error was resolved.

Cause

HCL not putting out enough energy.
