Torch Readback Error
Troubleshooting steps for resolving horizontal or vertical torch position readback mismatches on Thermo Scientific iCAP Q, RQ, and TQ ICP-MS instruments when torch movement becomes mechanically stuck.
Issue
The horizontal or vertical torch position readback does not match the commanded setpoint.
Environment
- iCAP Q
- iCAP RQ
- iCAP TQ
Resolution
- Identify whether the Horizontal or Vertical torch position is not responding correctly.
- If the Vertical torch position is stuck:
a. Move the Vertical position slider to the opposite end of the range.
b. While the torch is moving, gently apply upward pressure to the center tube holder.

- If the Horizontal torch position is stuck:
a. Move the Horizontal position slider to the opposite end of the range.
b. While the torch is moving, gently apply pressure toward the rear of the instrument on the injector tube holder.

- Verify the torch position readback now follows the commanded setpoint correctly.
Cause
The torch positioning mechanism can occasionally become stuck in one direction. Applying gentle manual pressure while commanding movement may restore normal operation.
