Melting torch, aftermarket ESI/Meinhard

Environment

  • iCAP 6000 / 7000
  • Quartz torch

Resolution

  • Replace aftermarket torch with correct Thermo Fisher Scientific torch.

Analysis

  • Confirmed Proper Argon pressure and purity.
  • All O-rings in place.
  • Base and torch installed correctly.
  • Coil aligned as it should be.
  • Found an aftermarket torch installed.

Cause

Found that ESI / Meinhard torch had a manufacturing defect .  The orifice for the cool gas was improperly etched.  It would not allow the vortex of argon to occur, thus allowing the torch to melt.
