Autosampler Probe Not Pulling Sample

Originally submitted by kendall.norwood@thermofisher.com on 3/25/2025 9:55:30 PM UTC

Issue

The ASX-560 autosampler probe is not pulling the solution as expected. This issue can prevent the proper functioning of the autosampler and affect the overall analysis process.

Environment

  • ASX 560
  • ASX 280

Resolution

Test the sample uptake line:

  1. Disconnect the nebulizer capillary from the peri pump sample tubing; the peristaltic pump sample tubing needs to be clamped into place
  2. Turn on the peristaltic pump (plasma is not required)
  3. Place autosampler probe in solution (can be DI)
  4. Watch the probe capillary to see if solution is moving,
    1. if it reaches the disconnected sample line then there is no issue in that section
    2. if solution doesn't flow through that section:
      1. check peri pump tension
      2. replace probe, and see if solution begins to flow
    3. if solution does move through, continue to step 5
  5. Stop the peristaltic pump
  6. Reconnect the nebulizer capillary to the sample line
  7. Disconnect the nebulizer capillary from the nebulizer.
  8. Turn on the peristaltic pump and watch for solution to flow
    1. if solution doesn't flow through the section, then the nebulizer capillary must be the issue
      1. replace the capillary to the nebulizer, and see if solution begins to flow again
    2. if solution does flow, move on to step 9
  9. Stop the peristaltic pump
  10. Reconnect the capillary to the nebulizer.
  11. Turn on the peristaltic pump
  12. Turn on the nebulizer gas flow, and watch for the solution to flow
    1. if solution doesn't flow then the nebulizer needs to be replaced
    2. if solution flows, then then the issue has been resolved, continue to light the plasma and run as usual .

Cause

Possible causes include: Clogged probe Incorrectly tightened peristaltic pump clamps Clogged nebulizer capillary Clogged nebulizer
