Condenser Fan Motor Replacement

Issue

The fan motor is not turning causing cooling issues

Environment

  • Thermoflex 900
  • Thermoflex 1400
  • Thermoflex 2500

Resolution

Remove all power by toggling the rocker switch on the back panel to the off position and unplugging the power cord from the wall outlet

Tools Required:
Small Phillips Head Screwdriver

1) Remove the Side Panels using the following steps or video linked here as a guide: How to Remove the Cover on a ThermoFlex 900 / 1400 / 2500 Chiller.
    a) Use a Philips head screwdriver to remove the eleven #6-32 x 1/4" screws indicated in the illustrations below.

    b) Slide the right panel back approximately one inch, then lift slightly from the rear to disengage the panel's two tabs from their slots.
    c) Then remove the left side

2) Disconnect the capacitor mounted on top of the compressors electrical box. Loosen the mounting bracket screw and roll the capacitor backwards to remove.

3) Remove the compressor electrical box cover by placing a small flat head screwdriver into the center slot located at the bottom of the cover. Gently depress the tab until the catch releases. Pull the bottom out and up to remove

Note: Some units may have a compressor electrical box with a screw connection on the side.  Remove the screw and set the grounding wire to the side.  This must be reinstalled when closing the electrical box.

4) Note the wires and their locations (i.e. by taking a picture) to assist with the rewiring of the condenser fan motor. Disconnect the compressor fan motor wires.

Note: The compressor electrical box and connection may vary but they will be tied into the compressor connections. The fan and compressor are at the same points per the wire diagram clips below.

5) Remove the four bolts holding the fan guard to the condensing unit, two on each side. The fan will slide out easier on one side then the other and may need to be turned and a plumbing line moved to allow it to slide out.

6) Once loose, remove the fan assembly to gain access to the fan blade and motor mounts.

7) Remove the fan blade, and the four bolts that mount the fan motor to the guard.

8) Install the replacement and wire into the compressor electrical box. Replace any tywraps that were cut to ensure wires are secure.
