T1 Turbine Pump Replacement

Issue

T1 Turbine Pump Replacement

Environment

  • ThermoFlex 900
  • ThermoFlex 2500

Resolution

1) Power off chiller by first pressing power button on front panel display and then moving the rocker switch on back panel to off position

2) Unplug power cord to chiller.

3)  Drain water from chiller either by pumping dry or opening drain valve on back of chiller.

4) Remove the Right Side Panel.
    a) Use a Philips head screwdriver to remove the five #6-32 x 1/4" screws indicated in the illustrations below.

    b) Slide the right panel back approximately one inch, then lift slightly from the rear to disengage the panel's two tabs from their slots.

5)  Disconnect the CBA cable from the display panel.

6)  Disconnect Purge valve connection.

7)  Disconnect the pump suction and discharge hoses from the pump. Use a 11/16" specific sized wrench with at least 15 or 16 inch length for the added leverage.

8)   Remove 2 nuts and washers from left side of pump/motor, you need tilt pump to right to remove back nut and washer. The nuts holding the pump to the chassis are 13mm or ½ inch. You will need to lever the motor up to get the nuts off as they are trapped under the motor.

9)       Remove 2 nuts and washers from right side  under Mid Pan.

10)       Lift pump and rotate to access rear power cover and connections. Loosen top and bottom screws but do not remove screws. Access panel slides off.

11)   Remove Black power connections and Green/Yellow ground wire. You will need a 9/32 inch socket to remove the green ground nut from the motor assembly.

12)   Before removing pump motor mounting hardware and vibration eliminators note location by measuring distance using ruler. Transfer to new Pump/Motor assy. You can leave the stud screws in place if you remove and lever the pump up on the right side to remove the nuts.

13)   Transfer Suction and Pump fittings from old to new Pump/Motor assy. 11/16" specific wrench and fresh Teflon tape.

14)   Check the wiring of the new pump in order to determine what voltage it has been configured for. The pumps have been know to be wired for either 208/230 which is required for TF2500 or lower voltage of 115V which is required for TF900. The set voltage will be marked on the outside cover plate.  If the new pump received is not wired correctly for the model of chiller it will be installed in, use the information to follow to wire it correctly.

Below are pictures of how the pump will  be wired for Low (115V) and High (208V) voltage

Below is a diagram of how the pump will be wired for the 2 different voltage configurations.

15) Refill with distilled water and run the pump with the covers off as there will be trapped air in the lines. Tap on the inline check valve while power cycling the chiller to clear the bubble if you get low flow errors. Check for any leaks at the pump connections.

Analysis

There are situations in which pressures errors like Lo P1 or High P1 are encountered and initial measures such as those described in the knowledge article linked here: Lo P1 Error on Thermoflex 900/1400/2500 Chiller have failed to resolve the issue. Other issues such as a leaking pump that would also warrant a pump replacement.
