Issue

How do I change the location of the OMNIC Paradigm built-in measurements database?

Environment

  • Nicolet Summit
  • OMNIC Paradigm software

Resolution

Determine the File System of the External Drive
  1. Open File Explorer on the computer.
  2. Select "This PC" in the left-side pane.
  3. On the right-side pane, right click on the drive letter for the external hard drive (typically would be D:\) and select the Properties command from the popup menu.
  4. Find the "File System" item in the properties dialog box for the drive.  Possible file system options are NTFS, Fat, Fat32, or exFAT.
  5. Click Ok to close the properties dialog box.

Reformatting the drive (if necessary)

If the drive is already formatted to NTFS, skip these steps and continue with "Steps for changing the database location", otherwise continue with the steps below.

  1. Right click on the external drive and select the "Format..." command from the popup menu.
  2. Click the drop down box for File System and choose NTFS from the list of available options.

  2. Click the Start button and Ok to any confirmation messages to start formatting the drive.  NOTE:  Formatting the drive will erase any data that exists on the drive.  If there is any data on the drive that needs to be preserved, copy or backup the drive before formatting.
  3. Once the formatting is complete, the drive is now ready for use.

  1. Click Ok to close the Permissions dialog box
  2. Click Ok to close the Properties dialog box
  1. Copy the folder C:\ProgramData\Thermo Scientific\Databases to the new location designated in Step 2. NOTE: The ProgramData folder is hidden on the computer.  To open a File Explorer window directly to this location, click on the Windows Start menu and type %ProgramData% and press the Enter key.  A window should open at this location.  Navigate normally down to the Thermo Scientific folder from there.
  2. Open the folder C:\ProgramData\Thermo Scientific\Databases
  3. Double click on the file my.ini to edit the file using Notepad. Update the following line to use the new location, no trailing slash Datadir=C:/ProgramData/Thermo Scientific/Databases.  For Example, if the new folder created in Step 2 was named "Thermo", the new line would read as: Datadir=D:/Thermo/Databases
  4. Restart the computer.

Additional Information

  • The external drive must be an SSD, not a thumb drive.
  • SSD drives enumerate differently in Windows and thumb drives have not been tested for this purpose.
  • Only SSD drives have been tested, but conventional HDD drives may also work.
  • The recommended SSD drive is the Samsung T7 USB SSD series drive that is also recommend for backing up the computer.
  • These drives are compact, have fast transfer rates, and come in sizes of 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2TB.
  • Drive should be formatted to NTFS file system.

Cause

It may be desirable to change this location if there is limited storage space on the Summit on-board computer or if the customer desires the data saved to an external drive.
