Smart iTX Not Recognized by OMNIC

Issue

When inserting the Smart iTX into the FTIR instrument, OMNIC does not recognize that a smart accessory was inserted.

Other times the recognition may be intermittent or can be lost when using the accessory (for example when lowering the pressure arm).

Environment

Smart iTX

Resolution

Adjust position of smart chip on right side of the accessory so it makes better contact with the reader pins in the sample compartment.

  1. Remove Smart iTX from the sample compartment of the FTIR instrument.
  2. Remove crystal plate from top of accessory and set in a safe location.
  3. Look at the right side of the Smart iTX and identify the smart chip module.

  4. Tip smart iTX onto its left side to gain access to the set screw holding the smart chip module in place
  5. Loosen set screw using a 3 mm allen wrench or ball driver.
  6. Push on the smart chip module to force it away from the center of the Smart iTX base as far as it will go (indicated by blue arrow)

  7. Tighten set screw.
  8. Insert the Smart iTX back into the FTIR and verify that it is now recognized by OMNIC.
  9. Place crystal back on the Smart iTX.

Analysis

If the smart chip module doesn't make proper contact with the reader pins on the right side of the sample compartment, it will not be recognized.

It may also be intermittently recognized by OMNIC.  For example, when the users turns the pressure tower, OMNIC will say the smart accessory was removed or inserted.

Other possible reasons for the smart accessory to be not recognized could be:

  1. Reader pin stuck in.
  2. Reader pin module malfunction
  3. Smart chip module not programmed/lost programming
  4. OMNIC setting for "Survey bench and smart accessory" turned off

Cause

Smart chip module is loose.

Smart chip module is not positioned correctly.
